TechTalk: Verification Work in Open-Source SDV Communities

From MISRA Guidelines to CI, Review, and Evidence

Abstract

Open-source software is becoming a practical foundation for software-defined vehicles, but safety-critical development cannot be achieved by openness alone, nor by applying a coding standard as a checklist. This TechTalk introduces the role of MISRA C and MISRA C++ in the ISO 26262 landscape, then broadens the discussion to software verification practices that can work in diverse, distributed, and heterogeneous communities.

Drawing on experience with the Zephyr RTOS and Xen Hypervisor projects, we will discuss how safety-oriented coding guidelines can be tailored, justified, and reviewed in public development processes; how static analysis and other verification activities can be integrated into CI without blocking useful collaboration; and how “yellow flag” review models can help communities distinguish defects, deviations, technical debt, and project-specific risk.

The goal is to show how open-source SDV initiatives can move from isolated compliance expectations toward a shared engineering culture where evidence, reviewability, automation, and traceable decisions support both innovation and functional safety.

Speaker

Roberto Bagnara is professor of Computer Science at the University of Parma and Software Verification Expert and Evangelist at BUGSENG. He coauthored more than 40 papers, in international journals and conference proceedings, on programming languages, static analysis and other techniques for software verification. He is a member of the MISRA C and MISRA SQM Working Groups and of the ISO standardization working group for the C programming language.
